As part of efforts to decongest Kaduna Prisons, the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Abubakar Tanimu Zalani, has freed 100 inmates with minor offences.
The Chief Judge, who also heads the Committee for prison decongestion in the state attributed the freedom granted to the inmates to leadership change in the state and expressed confidence in the administration of Malam Nasir El-Rufai.
“There is a change not only in the prison or in the judiciary, but in the entire Kaduna State. We are aware of certain decisions that have taken place and we agree with such decisions,” Justice Zalani said.
Responding, Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai who was first conducted round the facilities in the prison expressed deep gratitude to the Chief Judge of the state and entire officers and men of Kaduna Prison for keeping the tempo high and in accordance with prison rules adding that “all of us are very proud of the Kaduna Judiciary.
“What you have been doing, attempting to decongest our prisons on a regular basis is something that I think every judiciary in Nigeria should

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed all governors to visit the prisons in their respective states and ensure that inmates are reduced to barest minimum.

He said in spite of the fact the resources in the state was limited and that he inherited merely empty treasury, his administration would do what it can to reduce prison congestion and improve the living condition of inmates in the state.
Welcoming the guests, Kaduna Comptroller of Prison, Malam Abubakar Garba said the state prison was presently loaded with 998 inmates and that 115 were condemned prisoners.
According to him, Kaduna Prisons has 11 training workshops, including tailoring, hairdressing, among others
