Former Nigeria goalkeeper, Joe Erico, has said the home-based duo of Femi Thomas and Daniel Akpeyi are good enough to replace Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama, after his exit from the national team.
As coach Sunday Oliseh looks to strengthen the Eagles towards competing favourably in matches, concerns have been raised over a suitable backup and possible replacement for the Lille shot stopper, who had said he would retire from the team after the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
Israel-based Austin Ejide had until recently been the backup choice for Enyeama, but his recent form has called to question his continued stay in the role.
But Erico, who spoke with our correspondent, said the country is blessed with lots of talented goalkeepers adding that the local league is a good avenue to scout some of them.
“Akpeyi is a goalkeeper I discovered from the sands a long time ago and he is still as good as when he started in the game,” he said.
“Many other goalkeepers abound everywhere in the country. There are others in the country’s leagues that are better than some of the overseas-based professionals. What they only need is the chance to prove themselves.
“Thomas, the Enyimba keeper, is also good. These are the keepers that we see week-in week-out. The ones in the foreign leagues are not that watched as we all know, so one cannot really say much.
