Three people belonging to the same family were buried alive under a building early this morning after heavy rains and landslides in the Dharampur area of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh.

Additional District Magistrate Mandi Vivek Chandel said a woman’s body has been retrieved from the mud and slush of the building, while search is one for two other members of the family. Their house was reportedly hit by a big boulder .

Chandel said he was already on his way to the flood-hit area, while rescue teams have been busy searching for bodies from the debris. The police, however, doubt if the two others will survive.

Flash floods in Sohan Khad have caused a major havoc resulting in partial submergence of the Dharampur bus stand. Some of the HRTC buses parked at the bus stand have suffered damage.

Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue and Disaster management) Tarun Shridhar said the water has receded in the area and the rescue and relief operation has been taken-up on war footing. Deputy Commissioner Mandi Dandip Kadam is monitoring the situation as Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh has asked the authorities to provide immediate relief and shelters to the affected families.

The people living near landslide areas and banks of rivers have been asked to remain alert to any possibility of natural calamities. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains and landslides in Himachal Pradesh during the next 24 hours.
