Tragedy; Man dies in Hospital after 9 years in coma

After 9 Years in Coma, Survivor of 2006 Mumbai Serial Train Blasts Gives Up

One of the survivors of the 2006 Mumbai train blasts, Parag Sawant died at a Mumbai hospital this morning. He was then 26 years old then, was injured in the 7/11 serial blasts on Mumbai's local trains and had been in coma for the past 9 years.

He was undergoing treatment at the PD Hinduja hospital in Mumbai, a statement from the hospital read, "Later at 6:00 am his saturation levels had dropped... He had a sudden respiratory arrest... In spite of all resuscitation measures, Parag could not be revived and was declared dead at 6:54 am on July 7, 2015. He died because of cardio respiratory arrest."



Mr Sawant was returning home from work on a Virar-bound local train on July 11, when a bomb ripped apart a coach of the train near Mira Road in 2006. It was one in a series of seven train blasts that rocked Mumbai that day killing nearly 200 people and injuring close to 1,000 persons.

Mr Sawant's wife, Priti was pregnant when the blasts brought their life to a standstill. She now works with the railways department and is the sole bread-earner in the family, their daughter Prachiti is eight years old now.

Though Mr Sawant went into coma due serious injuries suffered, his condition improved and he did come out of it in 2011, but slipped back due to repeated convulsions.

Mr Sawant is survived his wife Priti, daughter Prachiti and parents Jay Prakash & Madhuri. His brother Pratik who works at Bombay High and is expected to conduct the last rites. His funeral is to be held at Bhayandar on Wednesday.
