An ongoing military operation in Kamuku and Damari forests of Birnin Gwari local government area of Kaduna State has recovered about 2, 000 stolen herds of cattle.
The security operation, led by Brig. General John Samuel Malu of the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, also arrested nine suspects and recovered 127 rams and one donkey.
Governors of Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Niger and Katsina states met recently and agreed on a joint security operation to fish out bandits hiding in the forests.
Speaking with journalists shortly after visiting the site of the assembled rescued cows in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai commended the Nigerian armed forces and other security agencies for the breakthrough operation which has yielded positive results, stressing that the problem of bandits in the area has lingered for long.
El-Rufai, who said similar joint security operations are ongoing in other states like Niger, Katsina, Zamfara and Kebbi, called on the people of Kaduna to pray for the security personnel to end the activities of bandits in the state.
He said, “So far so good; we are very proud of the work done by the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies in trying to solve this lingering problem. The problem has lingered for long. We ask our people to pray for the security agencies carrying out this operation so that there will be minimal problems. The operation is a joint one currently going on in five states, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger that have forests where bandits are hiding to commit this crime. The army, Air Force, police, SSS, Civil Defence are all in this operation.”
Conducting Governor El-Rufai and his entourage round the operation camp in Damari, Birnin Gwari, Captain A. Ujah, who spoke on behalf of Brig.Gen. S. Malu, said nine bandits were arrested and three were killed during the exchange of gunfire.
“The operation is ongoing and we believe victory will be ours based on the progress we made so far. The joint security operations is headed by our boss, Brig.Gen. S. Malu,” he said.
One of the arrested suspected cattle rustlers who gave his name as Gambo Audu, confessed to committing the crime and pleaded for mercy.
Meanwhile, El-Rufai’s entrance to Birnin Gwari sent residents into jubilation. Birnin Gwari local government has experienced attacks which killed many and closed down commercial banks in the past.
