Preparations are in full swing at the Nagpur Central Prison for the execution of 1993 Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon. Memon will be hanged at 7am in Nagpur jail on July 30- also his 54th birthday. Security has been beefed up in Maharashtra to avert any untoward incident.
However, the prison department can change the date of execution in consultation with the government. In that case the authorities need to inform the court. This change in date can take place only in case of security and safety issues.
The rope which will be used in execution is prepared at Nagpur Jail. A prison officer said that the noose is prepared using soft cotton cloth that is lubricated with ripe bananas and ghee. This is done to reduce injury to the skin from the noose.
The entire process will take around 2 hours. Yakub will be asked to get up early morning to take a bath. If he wants any religious book to read or pray it will be given to him. Even if he asks for a priest (Dharmguru) the jail authority will allow him to come in Yakub's cell.
He will be served his favourite food if he demands.
Jail Superintendent Yogesh Desai who earlier hanged 26/11 Mumbai terror attack convict Ajmal Kasab will hang Memon. As per the Supreme Court rule, the dead body will be given to the family.
Sources in Nagpur Jail claim that one of the final rehearsals of hanging with a dummy was executed on Wednesday morning and similar grand rehearsal will be done in the evening. The rehearsal was done for 35-45 minutes.
Moreover, Home department officials have even roped in the services of maulvi in case his body is not claimed by family members as it happened in the case of Kasab. However, in case of Yakub, it is being done only for redundancy.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stop his hanging, rejecting his argument that correct procedure was not followed.
Yakub was found guilty in 2007 of helping plan and finance the deadly blasts in which 257 people were killed. His brother Tiger Memon, the main accused along with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, has been missing since 1993.
