A 42-year-old driver, Sunday Folajimi, who allegedly absconded with his girlfriend’s car valued N500,000, on Monday appeared before an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. Folajimi, who resides at No. 68, Arobadade St., Bariga, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan 20 at Industrial Road, Ilupeju, Lagos. He said that the accused fraudulently obtained N500,000 from his girlfriend, one Miss Bose Abayomi under the pretext of helping her to buy a car. “The accused, who just met his girlfriend four months earlier, persuaded her to buy a fairly used car and give it to him on hire purchase. “Folajimi promised to remit N50,000 to her every month till he finished payment for the car. “The complainant agreed, went to bank to withdraw the money and gave it to the accused.
Olatunde said that two days after, the accused brought a Volkswagen Passat car and showed it to Abayomi, but later disappeared with the car to an unknown destination. “All efforts made by the complainant to locate and recover her car proved unsuccessful as the accused had relocated and his phone numbers were no longer reachable.” The prosecutor said that the accused was later arrested in Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos, six months after his disappearance. “
The accused was arrested but claimed that he had sold the car at the rate of N100,000 at Owode Onirin Market, Lagos.” The offences, Olatunde said, contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 312 prescribes a 15-year jail term as penalty for the offence. However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case to July 15 for mention.
