A 2.5kg mass of human hair was removed from the stomach of a 15 year old girl at Thane. The girl used to swallow her own hair and over the years was diagnosed with a rare disease called trichobezoar and operated upon at the civic hospital at Kalwa.

The girl, Sarika Barde is a resident of Shahapur in rural Thane. She is mentally challenged and was habituated to eating strands of hair and paper since the last years. Her parents were aware of this habit but didn't realise the ill effects till she started complaining of stomach ache till recently.

The family initially consulted doctors at Shahapur following which they approached the civic run Chattrapati Shivaji Memorial hospital at Kalwa. The doctors here performed various tests on her and after diagnosing the condition decided to operate on her.

"The patient had a long standing habit of swallowing her own hair and rough papers. She was brought for complaints of loss of appetite, weight, abdominal distension. During investigation, she was diagnosed with a rare disease called trichobezoar . In this condition, a bunch of hair is formed and collected in stomach," informed surgeon Dr Sukesh Thakur who operated on her.

The three hour long operation was performed along with another professional Dr Vishwas Sapatnekar on Wednesday afternoon following which the mass was successfully removed from her stomach. The doctors made a three inch incision on her stomach and removed the lump from her stomach that had probably accumulated over the last few months.

"It was not an easy task removing the huge ball of hair from the incision. This is one of the rare operations that have been performed," said Dr Thakur.

The girl is now recuperating at the hospital and will be discharged after initial days of recuperation.
