
The deputy governor of Jigawa State and some top government officials over the weekend escaped death when a boat conveying them capsized on a river at Guri local government area of the state.
The accident was said to have happened when the deputy governor visited the area to flag off the clearing of grasses that blocked the flow of water in Hadejia River.
Other people on board when the boat sank into the river were a member representing Guri/kirikasam/Birniwa federal constituency, Hon Abubakar Hassan Fulata, a member of the state House of Assembly, Hon Sulaiman Musa Kadara, chairman, Guri local government, Hon. Haruna Dauda and permanent secretary of the state Ministry of Environment.
Speaking to our correspondent, an eye witness, Ibrahim Garba, revealed that the boat capsized and threw all the people on board into the river.
The eye witness narrated that it took the intervention of some fishermen and good swimmers to rescue those on board while some of the officials who are from the area managed to swim out of the river.
When contacted, Hon Fulata, who collaborated with the state government to carry out the project, confirmed the incident, but maintained that the accident was a minor one caused by overloading.
The Guri local government chairman, Hon Haruna Dauda, who was on board when the boat capsized, declined comments, saying “the project is being handled by Hadeji Jammare River Basin, so go and contact them; they are in the best position to answer your questions”.
