Samsung has launched two new big screen phones as part of its flagship Note series - Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ at an event in New York. The devices will be available globally starting August, 2015. Both have 32GB or 64GB storage options available in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium variants.
Both of the phones feature a 5.7-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1440p) Super AMOLED displays but the S6 edge+ has a dual edge screen with extended curved displays on the edges.
The Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ are powered by a Samsung Exynos octa core (2.1GHz Quad + 1.5GHz Quad), 64 bit chip and 4GB RAM (LPDDR4). The two will come in 32GB and 64Gb storage variants but there's no microSD card slot.
The phones run Android 5.1 Lollipop with a new optimised version of Samsung's TouchWiz UI layer.
Both of the phones sport a 16MP rear camera with Optical Image Stabilisation and a 5MP front-facing camera. The devices are backed by a 3000mAh battery that supports fast charging with both wireless and wired chargers.
In terms of connectivity, the two phones support WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, MIMO(2x2), Bluetooth 4.2 LE, ANT+, USB 2.0, NFC, GPS/GLONASS, and 4G LTE Cat.9 / LTE Cat.6 (differs by market) options. The phones come with a fingerprint sensor and heart rate monitor.
According to Samsung, the newly-designed Galaxy Note5 provides a new set of productivity tools such as SideSync, along with a much refined 5th generation S Pen capabilities for better multi-tasking.
The Note5 ergonomically fits in one hand with a narrower bezel and curved back. The flat screen and the curved shape makes it easier to use the phone with one hand as per the company.
Samsung claims the Galaxy Note5's new S Pen feels more solid and balanced in the user's hand, offering improved writing capabilities and a variety of tools. It features a clicking mechanism to offer a better experience and users can now quickly jot down ideas or information even when the screen is off without even unlocking the phone. The 'Air Command' feature has also been given an upgrade; now the icon hovers for instant access to all of S Pen tools from any screen at any time. Users can also annotate on PDF files and capture lengthy web articles or long images at once via 'Scroll capture.'
Samsung's new phones also come with improved video capabilities including Steady Video, which provides Video Digital Image Stabilization on both the front and rear cameras for sharp, crisp video on-the-go, and Video Collage Mode, which allows users to record and edit short videos easily in various frames and effects. The Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 also feature 4K(UHD) video filming and Live Broadcast, which lets users instantly live stream Full HD video straight from the phone to any individual, group of contacts, or even the public through YouTube Live. Anyone who receives the YouTube link from a Galaxy S6 edge+ or Note5 user will be able to enjoy live stream video from his or her smartphone, tablet, PC or Smart TV with YouTube connectivity.
The Galaxy S6 edge+ utilizes the edge displays offering features such as 'Apps edge' for easy access to favourite apps, and enhanced 'People edge' for easy communications with preferred contacts. 'Apps edge' allows users to access their favourite apps by just swiping the edge display. 'People edge' helps users to connect their close contacts easily. From the edge screen, users can quickly find their pre-set contacts and send message or give a call directly.
