Nasarawa Assembly suspends clerk over illegal fund withdrawal

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has suspended its Clerk, Mr. Ego Maikeffi, for allegedly withdrawing the sum of N1m from the coffers of the House without the consent of the speaker.

Abubakar Kana (APC) representing Kokona West in his contribution before the floor of the House, raised the alarm over the alleged transaction by the clerk without prior approval by the lawmakers.

The House unanimously directed the Assistant Clerk, Ibrahim Musa, to assume the position of Clerk in acting capacity pending the investigation of the matter.

The lawmakers also accused Maikeffi of insubordination in the discharge of his duty since he took over as the Clerk following the death of the former Clerk, Moses Ondaki.

The lawmakers also criticised the delay in the payment of teachers and local government workers’ salaries.

The lawmakers thereby called on the state government and the state Universal BasicEducation to expedite action on the payment of workers’ salaries.

The local government staff are being owed two months’ salary, it was learnt.
