Hardship; Eko DISCO sacks 300 workers

Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Eko DISCO, has sacked no fewer than 300 workers creating fear among the staff of the company.
Mostly affected were engineering, marketing, accounts, human resource, security, medical, records, cleaning and driving departments.
However, the management said it only sacked 272 staff
The sacked workers, Vanguard investigation revealed, having worked with the new company following the privatization of the electricity two years ago, were expecting confirmation letters only to be served termination letters.
One of the affected workers told Vanguard that no fewer than 300 of them were affected after working as contract and casual staff for about two years.
While the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Mr. Joe Ajaero could not be reached, an official of the union told Vanguard that the union was already looking into the disengagement matter.
However, reacting Public Affairs officer/Assistant General Manager of the company, Godwin Idemudia, said the agreement reached between the Bureau of Public Enterprise, BPE, and various DISCOs, discouraged any form of sack in the first six months, but thereafter such action could be justified.
