US doctor tells healthy people they have cancer so he can charge their insurance company

A rich and well known oncologist was arrested after falsely telling patients that they have cancer so he can make more money.
Dr. Farid Fata of Michigan, who is a cancer specialist, faces life in prison after he told many healthy people that they had cancer in order to defraud their insurance company.
Fata pleaded guilty to 16 charges, including fraud, money laundering and conspiracy for needlessly ordering people to get cancer treatments at one of his seven clinics.
Prosecutors are asking the judge to sentence Fata to 175 years in prison. His defense attorneys have asked for a 25 year sentence.

The doctor allegedly distributed about 9,000 injections or infusions to patients who did not need it.
On top of lying to patients about cancer, Fata also lied to the people who had the disease, giving them false hope about their chances of survival so that they would continue their treatment.
According to court documents, Fata defrauded Medicare out of $35 million over a 2 year period. His wife acted as the CFO of his company. They lived in a mansion in an upscale neighborhood.
